0001 <chapter id="introduction" > 0002 <title>Introduction</title> 0003 <para> 0004 &kxstitch; is a program that lets you create cross stitch patterns and charts. 0005 Patterns can be created from scratch on a user defined size of grid, which can be 0006 enlarged or reduced in size as your pattern progresses. Alternatively you can 0007 import images from many graphics formats. When importing images you can restrict 0008 the conversion to full stitches or optionally use fractional stitches. You may 0009 also use images as backgrounds resizing them to fit in a selected area. These 0010 imported images can then be modified using the supplied tools to produce your final design. 0011 </para> 0012 <para> 0013 There are many tools to aid designing your pattern, from open and filled rectangles 0014 and ellipses, filled polygons and lines and backstitching. Additionally cut, copy 0015 and paste can be used to duplicate selected areas. Selected areas can also be 0016 rotated 90, 180 and 270 degrees anti clockwise, or mirrored horizontally or vertically. 0017 </para> 0018 <para> 0019 There is also a pattern library that can be used to store small and not so small 0020 portions of patterns that can then be reused in other patterns. The patterns in these 0021 libraries are stored in a hierarchical list that makes it easy to sort and navigate them 0022 to find the ones you want. These pattern libraries can also be used as alphabets by assigning 0023 a character to each one. By using the Alphabet tool, each key press is searched for in the current 0024 library and if present, the associated library pattern will be inserted in the pattern. 0025 </para> 0026 <para> 0027 Please report any bugs or feature requests to the <ulink url="http://bugs.kde.org">KDE Bugtracking System</ulink> 0028 or the <ulink url="http://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kxstitch">&kxstitch; mailing list</ulink> 0029 </para> 0030 </chapter>
