An example of this can be seen in <xref 0013 linkend="fig-thumbnailview"/> below. For 0028 the date bar to work properly you should, however, aim at keeping your 0029 images sorted at all time. Sorting you images can be done by selecting all 0030 images, and choosing <menuchoice><guimenu>Images</guimenu><guimenuitem>Sort Selected by 0031 Date & Time</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. The sorting will not reorder images which has 0032 the same date and time, so if you have say 100 images with the date 1992 0033 (i.e. no month, no day, only year), then you may move them around, and their individual order will stay unchanged after a sort.</para> 0034 0035 <para>Dragging an image from the viewer to the background will set 0036 the image as the background image of your desktop.</para> 0037 0038 <para>By clicking on an image you load it into the viewer, if no viewer 0039 window is present, a viewer window will be created.</para> 0040 0041 <para>If you select a number of images, and presses <keycombo>&Ctrl;<keycap>I</keycap></keycombo> 0042 or chooses <menuchoice><guimenu>Images</guimenu><guimenuitem>View 0043 Selected</guimenuitem></menuchoice>, the images will be loaded into the 0044 existing viewer (if no viewer exists, one will be created). In the latter case, &kphotoalbum; will never 0075 show the image again, but it will keep it on disk. This is useful if 0076 there for example is <emphasis>thumbnail images</emphasis> stored among 0077 your images. This thumbnail image would contain an overview of all the 0078 other images, and would thus be useless in &kphotoalbum;, but for other 0079 application, say a web browser, it might be needed.</para> 0080 </sect1> 0081 0082 0083 <sect1 id="sect-offline-mode"> 0084 <title>Offline Mode</title> 0085 <para>There is a constant battle going on between data growing, and hard 0086 disks getting bigger. If you have a large number of images, you might find 0087 yourself in the middle of that battle, not having enough hard disk space to 0088 store all your images. In that situation you might choose to put some of 0089 the images on CD's. An alternative scenario might be that you are going on a 0090 business trip, and want to bring your images with you, but do not have the 0091 20GB disk space requires for that purpose.</para> 0092 0093 <para>&kphotoalbum; offers a solution to that problem, namely that it allows you 0094 to use it, without having the images available on disk. You do of course 0095 need to have them available at some point in time for &kphotoalbum; to realize 0096 that there are new images for it to index. <xref 0097 linkend="fig-offline-mode"/> shows &kphotoalbum; when it is not capable of 0098 finding all needed images on the disk.</para> 0099 0100 <figure id="fig-offline-mode"> 0101 <title>&kphotoalbum; in Offline Mode</title> 0102 <mediaobject> 0103 <imageobject> 0104 <imagedata fileref="offline-mode.png" format="PNG"/> 0105 </imageobject> 0106 </mediaobject> 0107 </figure> 0108 0109 <para>Images which have the corner cut of (that is images 1-4) are not 0110 available on disk. Thumbnails are, available for images 5-9, even though the 0111 images are missing from disk. Therefore &kphotoalbum; can show you the 0112 thumbnails for these images but you cannot view them in the viewer. (We used to 0113 cut of the corner of thumbnails to indicate the image is missing from disk but 0114 that feature seems to be currently broken.) 0115 </para> 0116 0117 <para>As you can see, this feature requires you to copy files in and out of 0118 your directories, &kphotoalbum; does not have any support for asking you to 0119 insert the CD you labeled blah blah. Thus please forget about this feature 0120 if you are the kind of person who do not like messing with files etc, and 0121 instead simply ensure to buy hard disks that is large enough to always 0122 store all your images.</para> 0123 0124 </sect1> 0125 0126 0127 0128 <sect1 id="sect-privacy"> 0129 <title>Privacy</title> 0130 <para>Some time ago my girlfriend and I brought my laptop with us on a visit to my parents in 0131 law, to show them the images from our most recent holiday. &kphotoalbum; turned 0132 out to be a great success, and it didn't last long before my girlfriends 0133 little sister seized the laptop and started browsing around on her 0134 own. Unfortunately it didn't take her long either to get to some, let say 0135 unfortunate, images of me from my youth, and they all had quite a bit of 0136 laugh on me. That episode inspired me to add a new feature to &kphotoalbum;, 0137 namely privacy locking.</para> 0138 0139 <para>In the <guimenu>Images</guimenu> menu you will find a sub menu called 0140 <guimenuitem>privacy</guimenuitem>. To get some privacy, browse - while you 0141 are on your own - to the images that you want to keep private, and 0142 select <guimenuitem>Lock Away Current Set of Images</guimenuitem> from the 0143 privacy sub menu. Alternatively you may browse to the images you want to 0144 limit your little sister to see, and select <guimenuitem>Lock Away All 0145 Other Images</guimenuitem>.</para> 0146 0147 <para>Now you have specified what to hide away, and once you hand over your 0148 laptop to your little sister, simply choose <guimenuitem>Lock 0149 Images</guimenuitem>, and your sister will not be able to see the locked 0150 images. When done you may unlock them again using 0151 <guimenuitem>Unlock</guimenuitem>.</para> 0152 0153 <para>It is possible to specify a password that must be entered to unlock the 0154 database. In the <guimenuitem>privacy</guimenuitem> menu, simply select 0155 <guimenuitem>Change Password</guimenuitem> to set a password.</para> 0156 0157 <para>Don't get fooled to believe that this will help you hide away images 0158 for good. First the images are still on the disk, second, anyone with 0159 access to the <filename>index.xml</filename> file that &kphotoalbum; uses can read 0160 the password in clear text and optionally delete it. This feature is only 0161 meant as a protection against someone sitting with &kphotoalbum; unintentionally 0162 getting to your private images.</para> 0163 0164 </sect1> 0165 </chapter> 0166 0167 0168 <!-- Keep this comment at the end of the file 0169 Local variables: 0170 mode: xml 0171 sgml-namecase-general:t 0172 sgml-general-insert-case:lower 0173 sgml-always-quote-attributes:t 0174 sgml-indent-step:2 0175 sgml-parent-document: "index.docbook" 0176 End: 0177 -->
